Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-22-03  Bears092: Ivanchuk is offically my new hero.
Dec-22-03  Benjamin Lau: Nice! Ivanchuk must have had some real guts to sac all that material against Malaniuk, who with a rating of 2600 or so is not a patzer.
Dec-22-03  Benjamin Lau: White played a bit too arrogantly this game, overextending his large pawn center. 4. f3!? is considered an inferior variation today (although still playable at the club level) and 10 b4?! doesn't look so good.
Dec-22-03  Bears092: after putting this through CM9000, I must also say that this is why computers still aren't perfect.
May-04-04  Jim Bartle: If 4.f3 isn't supposed to be such a good move, maybe Malaniuk was just trying to get Ivanchuk out of his preparation and thinking early. Ivanchuk must have been awfully young in 88.
Sep-08-05  Raskolnikov: Sergey Volkov plays 4.f3 on a regular basis, and he is not a patzer (leading just now in the Russian championship). In his article (http://www.e3e5.com/petersburg/crea...) Vitjugov suggests 10.♘a4 (for example Shirov vs R Dautov, 1989). He also means that 19...♙d3 (clearing a1-f6) 20.♖a2 bc 21.♗h3 ♗f5 wins instantly.
Nov-16-05  Poisonpawns: 4.f3 is ok but white errs with 9.Nf3 when b4 is better Ivanchuck errs with 19g5? correct is strong 19..d3! A good game but alot of mistakes. 28.Bxd3?? is the losing move e5! was the correct move.Good game by Ivanchuck at 19 years old.
Feb-21-09  KERESOV: A fantastic game ! GM Ivanchuk sacrifice the exchange in the queenside for the initiative then gave up a knight to continue the attack ... and then switching front proceeded to trap the Queen in the kingside ! Bravo !

whiteshark: A few days ago Vassily gave an 1 hour long, so-called master class lecture (during the Tradewise Gibraltar tournament). <A must see for everyone interested in GM thin♔!>

Aug-08-13  csmath: Keres, Beliavsky, Ivanchuk, Shirov, Mamedyarov, Moskalenko, Malaniuk, Volkov ... played 4.f3. Ivanchuk stated this variation has no name as opposed to Leningrad, Samish, or Rubinstein. But it does, it is Kmoch or Shirov variation of NID.

Shirov played it couple of times against Karpov, Kramnik (in 2010), Sokolov, Beliavsky, and Hubner. And although he lost against Karpov twice he did not abandon the system. Therefore I'd say Kmoch is playable in particular for creative players.

offramp: Some very surprising moves by black in this game. I really like 19...g5. "I'll have your bishop - but not with the e-pawn."
