 | | al wazir: <Neurotic Patzer: the only move. 18. Rd3 Rg8 and white is screwed> Excuse me? 19. Bxg8, and now black can only postpone Rh3# with spite moves like Bd2+ or Bf8 and Bf3. If 19...Be4 then 20. Rh3+ Bh7 21. Rxh7#. If 19...Bxg2 then 20. Qxg2 e5 21. Rh3+ Qxh3 22. Qxh3+ Kxg8 23. Qg2+ K moves 24. Qxa8, etc. |
 |
Dec-11-05 | | erimiro1: <al wazir>Agree. Do you have any idea why white didn't play 18.Rd3 immediately? |
 |
Dec-11-05
 | | al wazir: The real purpose of 18. d5 seems to be to prevent black from playing Qd5. For example, 18. Rd3 Qd5 19. Rh3 Qg5. White is down a bishp with nothing much to show for it. |

 | | Gypsy: <erimiro1: ... Do you have any idea why white didn't play 18.Rd3 immediately?> Behold this previous post: <Calli: Heh, missed 18.d5! The point is that the immediate 18.Rd3? Qd5 19.Rh3 Qg5+ defends.>; it explains the poisonous nature of the "natural" 18.Rd3? |
 |
Dec-11-05 | | erimiro1: <Gypsy>Thanks. I missed that one. |
 |
Dec-11-05 | | Neurotic Patzer: Neurotic Patzer: <mymt: your note 18.Rd3 Rg8 and white is screwed could be answered by 19.Bxg8 Rxg8 20.Rh3#>
<mymt> I don't know why I wrote that. I'm a bit absent minded... well a lot absent minded, so you will have excuse me. also I wrote that at 3 in the morning before I went to sleep (couldn't resist it). The line I had in mind after 18. Rd3 was 19... f5 so if A. 20. Qh5 f6 21. Rh3 Rf7
B. 20. Qg5 Qe7 21. Qh6
<Obviously not Qxe7 and if 21. Qg3 Bd6> 21... f6 22. Rh3<Only move> 22... Rf7 and white is done.
Please excuse any typos on this post too!

Dec-11-05 | | AlexanderMorphy: great puzzle+game! |
 |
Dec-11-05 | | dakgootje: Yup missed it totally, saw some moves of the continuation, but totally missed 13. ♘xd7. Dunno whether i would have had it if i had some more time and wasnt as tired as now. Always good to think that in an other situation you probably would have had it, even if that isnt true, as people who think higher of themselves life longer then people with a more realistic view of themself, so i happily let myself believe that it just because of the lack of time and concentration. ;-) |

 |
Dec-11-05 | | Neurotic Patzer: By the way, If:
18. Rd3 Qd5 19. f4 Qxg2
<Only way to stop Rh3. if 19... f5 20. Qh4 Kg7 21. Rg3+ Kh8 22. Bxf5#> 20. Rg1 Qxg4 21. Rxg4 and white can only postpone mate. |

18...Qd5?! 19.Qh3!!
A.19...Kg7 20.Rg3+ Qg5+ 21.f4!! Qxg3 22.hg -> 23.Qh6+ Kh8 24.Bg6+ Kg8 25.Qh8# B.19...Qxg2 20.Be4+ Qxh3 21.Rxh3+ Kg7 22.Rg1+ Bg2 23.Rxg2# C. 19...Qg5+! 20.f4!! Bxg2!(20...Qxf4+ 21.Kb1 Bxg2 22.Qxg2! Dec-11-05
 | | Richard Taylor: I solved this except I didn't think of d5 ..so I need to now actualy play the moves and see if 'my line' also worked - but I was on the right track - very beautiful combo -why did Black castle??! |
 |
Dec-11-05
 | | al wazir: <aginis>: Very nice. You left out the line 18. Rd3 Qd5 19. Qh3 f5 20. Bxf5+ Kg7 21. Rg3+ Kf6 22. Qh4+ Kxf5 23. Qg5+ Ke4 24. Qg4#. You also didn't mention 19...Rd8 20. Bg6+ Kg8 21. Qh7+ Kf8 22. Qxf7#. |
 |
Dec-11-05
 | | Richard Taylor: <starkidaway: I think 18.d5!! was the critical move. I saw until Rd3 but realized that Rg8 was winning for black. it's those type of silent moves that make some attacking convinations work it's magic.> I would agree in principle but 18. Rd3 Rg8 19.Bxg8 and I cant see a defence for Black |
 |
Dec-11-05
 | | Richard Taylor: As far as I can see 18.d5 is unnecessary and 18. Rd3 wins |
 |
Dec-11-05
 | | Richard Taylor: The reason for d5 must be to block the diagonal that is Black's White-squared B so if 18. Rd3 Bxg2 19.Qxg2 Qd5 20. Qh3 Qg5+ 21. Kb1
I think White is still winning
but there is also 19. Rg3
hmmm 18. d5 stops it all in any case. |
 |
Dec-11-05
 | | kevin86: A good finish! White was able to execute a good kingside attack vs black. I didn't even try this one-these Sunday puzzles are "murder"-as Hank Stram used to say-. |
 |
Dec-11-05 | | shortsight: <kevin86> I didn't try too. Saw until 15.Bxh7+ but brushed it off thinking that it will be perpetual instead of winning. In OTB play, I won't even try Bxh7 in the 1st place. Sigh ... |
 |
Dec-11-05 | | Neurotic Patzer: er.. on my last post I meant "and BLACK can only postpone mate". |
 |
Dec-12-05 | | snowie1: It's a neat game to just study in the final position. Black's only move ..Qxd3 still couldn't prevent mate it a couple of moves. and I agree that Black's 12..0-0 was not good with White's guns trained on the K-side. |
 |
Dec-13-05 | | LIFE Master AJ: To answer a friend's question, I hit upon the idea of ...Nxd7 and ...Bxh7+ rather quickly. What was not so easy to see, and took many minutes, was the idea 18.d5!, which is not such a simple move to spot in advance. |
 |
Dec-13-05 | | hayton3: <LIFE Master AJ> Name of friend?, title?, USCF membership no.?, what program was he using?, was he scratching his ___ at the time? |

Dec-15-05
 | | patzer2: White's 13. Nxd7!! prepares a winning demolition of pawn structure combination with the pseudo-sacrifices
14. Nf6+! and 15. Bxh7+! immediately following. |
