Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-09-06  suenteus po 147: Is it me, or do Karpov's games have more "maneuvering" than the regular grandmaster's games? Whatever the answer, I could spend a week studying each knight and bishop and queen shuffle in this game alone. Positional play is fascinating and impressive, but it's also as difficult as all get out. I'm starting to appreciate tactics for their pure simplicity.
Jan-29-07  M.D. Wilson: This game IS pure simplicity.
Mar-21-08  Helios727: My Karpov book says that white lost on time, but that his position is lost anyway.
Dec-02-08  Woody Wood Pusher: what a SQUEEZE!
Dec-30-12  PinnedPiece: GTM Score=89 Par=92
Aug-02-16  dashjon: Interesting in the book "World Championship Interzonals Leningrad-Petropolis 1973 R.G. Wade et al. Istvan Csom missed a tactical shot for white in his note. Karpov did not go down his line anyway.
Nov-24-16  gars: <suenteus po 147> I am a weak player, so my opinion must be taken with not one, but with two grains of salt: yes, Karpov maneuvers a lot. In this aspect he reminds me of Petrosian and let's not forget that Spassky called Karpov "an improved Petrosian". Better players like <M.D.Wilson> may find simplicity here, but unfortunately I do not. Presently I am inching my way through Edmar Mednis' "How Karpov Wins" and Karpov's maneuvering always baffles me.
Nov-25-16  gars: Edmar Mednis in his book "How Karpov Wins" writes 29)Qa8 in place of Qa7, the only misprint I found in this book so far.
Nov-25-16  Howard: Does Karpov do a lot of "maneuvering"? That's almost like asking "Do birds fly?"

Seriously, Karpov was always known for that characteristic. Many times, he'd just maneuver patiently and wait for his opponent to make mistakes, and then he'd "make his move" at that point.

Karpov was probably one of the most patient players of all time, in fact.
