Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-05-04  Lawrence: In 26 games Karpov won 7, Vaganian 5, and 14 draws. Vaganian is still going strong: co-winner of the 2004 Aeroflot Festival against some strong competition.
Mar-05-04  Lawrence: 23.Bf5! Karpov says Vaganian cannot take the Bishop or he loses. Fritz and Junior say he can, precisely because of the 25...f6 that K. mentions in his book but does not analyze.

  offramp: Is Vaganian the current active leading exponent of the French?
Dec-20-04  JohnBoy: So what is suggested if black plays 23...gf5? I presume that white lifts the d-rook with 24.Rd3 f4 25.Qf4 and I don't see a way for black to survive.

  keypusher: OMGP V p. 300:

<23....gxf5! 24. Rd3 f4 25. Qxf4 f6! followed by ...Rg7 would have enabled Black to save the game: 26. Rg3+ (26. Ree3 Rg7! is weaker) 26...Rg7 27. Qxf6 Rxg3 28. fxg3 Qb6+ 29. Kh2 Qc7, or 26. Qxf6 Rg7 27. Qe6+ Kh7 28. Qf5+ Kh8 with a draw.>

Dec-04-18  SpiritedReposte: Interesting non conflicting kibitzing.
