Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-23-09  M.D. Wilson: 37. Ne5 is a mistake. Interesting game. Karpov really matched up well against Nunn.
Aug-23-09  paul1959: <M.D.Wilson> Black has to defend against 38 Qh8+ Qh7 39 Ng4+ Kh5 40 Nf6+ forking.

37...Qg7 38 Ng4+ Kmoves 39 Nf6+ Kh6 40 Qe3+ g5 41 hg5+ Kg6 (41... Qxg5 42 Qxa7) Qe4+ wins quickly

Nicest is 37... Kh7 38 Nd5 Qb7 39 Rf8 Ra1+ 40 Kh2 Qg7 41 Nf6+ Kh6 42 Qe3+ g5 43 hxg5+ Qxg5 44 Qh3+ Kg7 (Qh5 45 Rh8+) 45 Qh8+ Kg6 46 Qh7 mate. Other moves lead to above variation

Karpov's 37. Ne3! looks winning in any case

Sep-04-09  M.D. Wilson: That's right, after playing through it, Ne3 is a very good move.
Sep-04-09  GlebeDude: I keep looking for white with 31. Rf8+, seems to go nowhere...anyone care to evaluate?
