plang: This was Karpov's pet line though he had several losses with it; to Almasi in 1996 and to Lautier in Biel 1997. Ivanchuk's 12 Qh4 is a new idea that creates nasty threats. 17..Rd8 defends against the knight sacrifice of f7 as black will sack the exchange on d3 to blunt the attack. 18..Ne4 is a pretty defensive move hoping for 19 Be7?..Qf2+ 20 Kh1..Qe1+ 21 Re1..Nf2+ winning for black. After the multiple exchanges white has just a small advantage. 24 Qa7..Rd8 would be counterproductive for white.
