Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-23-05  notyetagm: I think Shirov missed the continuation 37 ... ♖xg7 38 hxg7+ ♔xg7 39 ♖h5 ♔f6 40 ♖f5+ and now the Black king cannot go to the e6-square because it blocks his e8-rook from defending his e5-knight (<self-interference>) so the knight drops off.

Note the critical role played by the White e4-pawn, providing an outpost on f5 for the White rook to <remove the guard> of the Black king in the above variation.

fredthebear: <notyetagm> FTB concurs with your calculations. After 40.Rf5+, it does not matter where the Black king moves... his knight is lost.

If instead 37...Kh8 38.RxRd7 and the pinned Black knight cannot recapture.
