Dec-03-03  InspiredByMorphy: Marching pawns, a rook sacrifice, and great positional insight! Spells Morphy all over this game. Against one of his most formidable opponents none the less!
Jan-10-06  morpstau: yes you are correct and indeed one game full of excitment. first he gains space on the queenside, second sacs a rook than before you know it you have a tipped over balck king>
Nov-02-06  tonsillolith: Why 5. Be2 instead of Bc4?
Jul-10-08  heuristic: <Why 5. Be2 instead of Bc4?> Because he played that in round 2 and got punished!
Morphy vs Lowenthal, 1858

to me, 18.Bh5 is classic Morphy. There are many "better" moves; but this one starts his trademark Kside attack. 19.a5 is cute, he needs that the BLK B off this diagonal.

At the same time it is careless Morphy, all too present in the Loewenthal match.

The idea of sac on f7 is great, and works out in the game, but

18...Nd7xe5!

casts doubt on the whole idea.

If 19 Qf5 Nh8! 20 a5 g6 21 Qh3 Bxa5 22 dxe5 Rxe5!

and the threats against h5 and e3 give Black the edge.
