Jan-14-05 | | 4PR1C0T: White is up a clear piece ... any master worth their beans can grind it out from here ... Black should resign regardless of who is playing ... |
Jan-14-05
 | | tpstar: At first I thought Morphy was messing around since he had 14. Bxh6 right there for the taking, but then again Black has the simple 14 ... Rxh6 because 15. Qxh6? Bg5+ wins the Queen. Nice combination with 18. Qxg4! snatching a piece = 19 ... Bf8 20. Rxf8+! Kxf8 21. Bg5+ and if 21 ... Nf3+ 22. Rxf3+ gxf3 23. Bxd8 with 3 pieces for a Rook. This Long Whip variation of the KGA (3 ... g5 + 4 ... g4 + 5 ... h5) seems to give Black whiplash more often than not. |
Jan-11-06 | | morpstau: Even a blind person can see there is no hope for black after the dust has settled from this reckless and ancient variation of the kings gambit. |
Aug-10-06 | | thegoodanarchist: If one is just casually playing through the game and not paying attention, 18.Qxg4 comes as a shock. Then one sees that the queen sac is temporary because of the undefended Black king's rook. But still, very aesthetically pleasing!!! |
Aug-31-06 | | omidsarmad: perhaps this is clear to the rest of you, but RxH8+ why doesn't black just block with his bishop? |

White can play 19...Bf8 20.Rxf8+ and either wins the queen back with an extra piece or goes for mate after 20...Kxf8 21.Bh6+ |
Dec-20-07 | | nimh: Rybka 2.3.1 mp, AMD X2 2.01GHz, 10 min per move, threshold 0.33. Morphy no mistakes!
NN 2 mistakes:
13...Be7 1.15 (13...Bf6 0.47)
15...f5 2.55 (15...Bf8 1.18) |
Dec-01-08 | | WhiteRook48: NN made only 2 mistakes? He usually makes 35 in a 32-move game. |
Dec-23-08 | | WhiteRook48: I'm surprised Morphy himself didn't give odds in this game |
Jan-06-09 | | WhiteRook48: amazing Morphy game, but Morphy always wins when he plays NN. |
Jan-13-09 | | WhiteRook48: the way this could be better is: Morphy sacs all his pieces except for one knight and checkmates with it, meanwhile Black has all his pieces. |
Feb-03-09 | | WhiteRook48: NN may just have been trying to free up space with 15...f5 |
Mar-09-09 | | WhiteRook48: but it didn't work |
Apr-06-09 | | saltkrakan: Good game by Paul Morphy.
NN on the other hand made some mistakes, after losing the piece NN was gone, he was playing Paul Morphy! |
Nov-07-09 | | WhiteRook48: 19...Bf8 loses to 20 Bh6 |
Apr-09-10
 | | HeMateMe: Exciting game. The only problem with this style is, you don't see it in GM games today. The only question mark about Morphy, really, is that he had no peer, no strong rival, except Andersson. I wonder how his style would have held, against today's grandmasters? |
Oct-22-10 | | healthystart: Who discovers who? A good demonstration by Morphy showing mastery in identifying which piece is pinned and making one of the most astonishing moves with his queen ever seen on a chess board. |
Dec-23-10 | | josejoasm: I think he played better with 11 or 12 years old than 20 up ;-) |
Dec-23-10 | | CapablancaFan122: This was strangely similar to Greco's games. At least until after the opening. |
Jan-28-16 | | juanhernandez: I guess it was Morphy's reputation that made black resign. I see no quick win for white here, though white will win eventually with best play by both sides. |
Jan-28-16 | | juanhernandez: Everybody have his/her own circle of friends |
Apr-27-17
 | | louispaulsen88888888: NN played quite well up to a point. 13...Bf6 seems almost even. You have to give NN credit. Never quits trying after all these years. |
Dec-06-20
 | | Korora: 20...Kxd8 21. Rh1 Nd7 22. Rh8+ Nf8 23. Bf7 Kc7 24. Bh5 and NN's passed ♙ croaks on the next move. |
May-23-23 | | TwoMinutesToMidnight: juanhernandez: I guess it was Morphy's reputation that made black resign. I see no quick win for white here, though white will win eventually with best play by both sides. white is up a piece basically anyone strong enough like Morphy wins easily |
