Aug-29-04  Knight13: Pretty good draw position.

Chessical: Erkel takes the draw with <38...Kd2>, but he could try for more with <38...Kb4>.

Of course, there will inevitably be improvements to the following rough line of analysis, but the Q+N v Q+P endgame is interesting. The N on c1 needs to be brought back to life with the minimum of tempi.

Thank you Chessgames!

<The painting is that of Hungarian opera composer and chess master Ferenc Erkel.>

Jan-05-14  thomastonk: From "Schachzeitung" 1859, p 248-249: Black is a player named Spitzer, not Spiker, and the game has been played on May 31, 1858 (but not in 1855) in Pesth. I'll correct the date and submit a correction slip.

Spitzer could be Dr. Lipót Spitzer; Erkel and this Spitzer held the position of president and vice-president of the Pesth Chess Club in 1881 (see Hilbert's Kemeny book, p 14).
