Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-09-02  bishop: A nice smothered mate by Morphy. Black could only protect his c-Pawn by moving his King, this disadvantage of a monarch in the open cannot be rectified very easily.
Dec-09-02  pawntificator: Morphy convincingly demonstrates the correct procedure for taking advantage of weaker opponents, although this guy must have been fairly good at chess if he didn't receive odds from Morphy. Paul (my good buddy) had such a wonderful feel for the balance of chess and he always seized the initiative and honed in on weaknesses created by bad moves, tipping the scales on his hapless opponents. Not to mention how he was able to defeat all the greatest players in the USA and Europe who didn't necessarily play bad moves.
Jul-27-04  white pawn: What if 18...Qe8?
Jul-27-04  Calli: Just 19.Re1 and Black cannot defend e7
Dec-01-05  Chopin: After 19. Ne5 Black is toast.
Jan-13-06  blingice: Game Collection: Morphys Masterpeices

Why would Morphy play such an opening if #5 is valid?

Aug-17-06  sneaky pete: <Calli> Unfortunately after 18... Qe8 19.Re1 .. isn't possible, Morphy gave QR odds in this game.
Aug-17-06  Calli: <sneaky pete> Sure, two years later and you remove a rook when I am not looking :-). White is, of course, lost in that case.

The game looks questionable to me now. Where was published? I only see it in the Shibut supplemental game A25. I looked in Lange, Löwenthal first editions and in Sergeant (dover edition) and did not find it. Is it in Maróczy or later editions of Lange and Löwenthal?

Aug-18-06  sneaky pete: <Calli> It's from a collection by David Lawson, published in the British Chess Magazine, August 1978, as Unknown Morphy Games. Lawson lists "New Orleans newspapers of the time" like the <Sunday Delta>, the <Times-Democrat> an the <Star> among his sources.
Aug-18-06  Calli: <sneaky pete> Thanks! I will try to look into it a little further. Some of Lawson's games have been found to be spurious.
Dec-23-07  nimh: Rybka 2.3.1 mp, AMD X2 2.01GHz, 10 min per move, threshold 0.33.

Morphy 3 mistakes:
9.c3 -0.40 (9.Be2 0.84)
13.Kg1 0.00 (13.exf6 0.65)
14.Nh2 -1.10 (14.exf6 0.61)

NN 7 mistakes:
9...Nf6 0.00 (9...Nce7 -0.40)
11...Bg7 0.16 (11...Be7 -0.27)
12...f6 0.65 (12...Rf8 0.14)
13...g4 0.61 (13...fxe5 0.00)
16...Rf8 5.25 (16...Qc5 -1.06)
18...Re8 10.08 (18...Qe8 5.18)
19...Qxe2 #2 (19...Bxe5 9.68)

Jan-01-09  WhiteRook48: Morphy made mistakes? Well they were outnumbered by NN's mistakes. 19. Ne5!! shows you, NN, never think Morphy gave you a free queen because then you lose immediately.
Feb-28-09  WhiteRook48: NN never develops
Apr-20-16  Bobinator: Morphy's queen sacrafices seem so logical studying his game. But to discover that while playing your own game is a whole other story.
May-04-16  tanu123: very nice
Dec-28-16  john.owen: 16...Qc5 saves the game. Looking at best moves for both sides on analyze this!, after 22 moves it leads to an advantage for black

16...Qc5 17. Bg5+ Ne7 18 Qe2 dxc3+ 19 Be3 cxb2 20 Bxc5 bxa1=Q+ 21Kh2 Qxh1+ 22 Kxh1 d6
