Sep-28-04  Morty: This is an excellent King's Gambit by Paulsen. I very much enjoy watching King's Gambit games like this one, they are absolutely beautiful. The sacrificing of material, the fluid motion of the pieces coordinating a devasting mating attack, I could watch games like this all day long.

  al wazir: If 15...Kxa5 then 16. Bd2+ Bb4 17. Bxb4+ Kxb4 18. Qa3+ Kb5 19. Nc3+ Kb4 20. Rb1#. Also winning is 15. Qd3+ b5 16. a4 Rb8 17. axb5 Rxb5 18. Nc3 c6 19. dxc6 dxc6 20. Qxd8.
Jun-10-07  jon01: I totally agree with Morty.
Oct-22-07  gambitfan: If I understood right, Paulsen plays the Blachly Gambit against Blachly himself and wins !

Ironie du sort ?

Nov-19-07  nimh: Rybka 2.4 mp, AMD X2 2.01GHz, 10 min per move, threshold 0.33.

Paulsen 3 mistakes:
6.Bxf7+ -0.72 (6.Be2 -0.24)
14.bxa5+ 3.62 (14.Qd4+ 310.00)
19.d6 3.12 (19.Be3 4.34)

Blachly 2 mistakes:
7...Kf6 3.12 (7...Kg7 -1.00)
10...Kxe5 #8 (10...Kd6 4.27)

Jan-04-08  DanLanglois: 13 b4+ missed a complex mate in 6 with 13 Be3+. For example, 13 Kb5 14 Qd3+ Nc4 15 Nc3+ Kb4 16 a3+ Ka5 17 Qxc4 Bxa3 18 Rxa3#.

Honza Cervenka: <gambitfan> Blachly Gambit is a line of KGA where black after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 g5 4.Bc4 continues 4...Nc6. Of course, the line got its name after this quite famous game though I would say that Blachly Defense (if Mr. Blachly deserves such a honour to have a variation called after him but as I can see he was the first who played this move in this position) would be more precise name here.

More successful examples of "Blachly Gambit" from black side are Mieses vs Chigorin, 1903 or Loman vs Euwe, 1920 and Spielmann vs Gruenfeld, 1923

Oct-19-08  syrmatt: Wow, the king is chased all over the board. Nice!

This game went unfinished. It's the sole surviving score from Paulsen's record-breaking 15-board blindfold simul, but all the games were adjourned with only 19 moves played, and were never resumed, so the event was never celebrated and the occasion slipped from public memory. A letter from Louis to his brother, Wilfried, confirms the details - it appears in the Renette biography.
