Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-07-05  RookFile: Apparently, this very sharp and entertaining game from Staunton's was his last serious one. I think if you went around and showed it to a
bunch of people, omitting the names,
they would guess that Boris Spassky
was white.
Apr-07-05  aragorn69: Right. And they might also guess that Black was Mr Patzer himself ! ;-)
Apr-07-05  Stevens: yes, i guess Dublin Op means open and therefore the opposition was fairly low rated!
Apr-07-05  hintza: Not sure they had ratings in 1865! But I know what you mean. :-)
Apr-07-05  Stevens: <hintza> lol. I think you're right. When was the first ratings list published then? Any ideas?
Apr-07-05  hintza: Well, the first Elo list was published in 1969 to my knowledge, but rating lists were made prior to this by the USCF using a slightly different system. Other people here will know much more about this matter.

Stonehenge: I'm pretty sure white was Steinitz.

MissScarlett: Yes. Staunton himself gives the game in his <ILN> column of October 28th 1865, p.426.
Feb-01-19  sudoplatov: Re ratings there always EDO. For 1865 it has:

1. Morphy 2719
2. Paulsen, L 2660
3. Kolish 2650
4. Steinitz 2624
233. Cordner 1993
