Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-07-03  drukenknight: Algaier variation again. Thorold was a good player in the Kings gambits even though he lost here. This is the line I like to play as white, at least up to Qxg4. I dont like 8 Qxf4 w/ 8 Qf3 I think white is okay.

I suspect, this game may be the reason that no one recommends this line for white anymore. It is the seminal game for Algaier variation that is cited in Tartakower's monumental: 500 Games of Master chess.

Even though he lost, I think white has the right idea.

Chessical: White is definately lost (by force) after Thorold plays <13.Qd5?> as instead of Rxf1+ there is:

13...Bh2+ 14.Kh1 Rxf1+ 15.Bxf1 Qxh4 and mate e.g. Nf2 cannot be avoided.

<7.d4> seems to be better than taking the g pawn with the Q.

Jun-01-14  GumboGambit: According to the Oxford Companion to Chess, 8...Bd6 represents the 'Horny Defense'.
Jun-01-14  john barleycorn: <GumboGambit> what about the same named attack?
