Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-28-05  soberknight: Essentially the familiar Petroff trap 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Nxe5 Nxe4 4 Qe2 wins a pawn because if 4...Nf6 5 Nc6+, as here.
Jul-19-06  Ybrevo: This game could also occur in a Froms Gambit "declined": 1. f4 e5 2. fxe5 d6 3. Nf3 dxe5 4. e4 Nf6 5. Nxe5 etc. The Froms Gambit is a very unpleasant alternative to The Bird for the White player, so maybe this line should have a closer look :-)

Domdaniel: Black's best line after 4.e4 Nf6 5.Nxe5 is probably to delay recapture (Petroff-style again) with 5...Bd6, eg 6.Nf3 Nxe4, dynamically equal. In this game Black was in trouble anyway before the final blunder (on move 7!!).

I played this 'From Declined' line recently, and won - it transposes into an unusual King's Gambit, after 1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.Nf3 dxe5 4.e4?! Nf6 -- and I deviated with 5.Nc3, ran into problems after ...Bc5 due to my uncastled king, but eventually consolidated, exchanged the DSB, and attacked on the f-file. Slowly, with black's queenside in a tangle: closer to my usual semi-positional stuff than true gambit play.

Transpositions are fun, but you have to be careful not to outsmart yourself. I rarely play either side of a 1.e4 e5 open game -- so transpositions like this From Declined aren't such a great idea.

Another example is the Reti, becoming a Dutch, becoming a Lisitsyn Gambit, winding up in a Latvian: 1.Nf3 f5 2.e4 e5 ... I won one of those, too, but it took 18 moves instead of 12.

Gambiteers are wired differently to Transposers.

Jul-23-11  sneaky pete: Bill Wall in <300 King's Gambit Miniatures> gives 5... Nxe4 two question marks while 6... Bf5 and 7... Nd6?? pass silently. Of course 5... Nxe4 looks foolish, when black has several good alternatives, but it's not a blunder. After 6.Qe2 .. black can choose between 6... Qd5 and the obvious 6... Qh4+

with at least equal chances. Even after 6... Bf5 7.d3 Qh4+ probably saves the game.
