TheAlchemist: What an oversight by White! And in a correspondence game. What could have gone wrong?
Nov-19-05  sneaky pete: <What could have gone wrong?> Setting up the proper position after receiving black's 18th move. My guess is that white, when playing 18.Rf7+ .., extensively analysed 18... Kg6? 19.Qe4+ Kh6 (.. Kh5? loses after 20.Rh7+ ..) 20.Rd1 .. with good chances for the sacrificed piece. When Hotting played 18... Kh6 immediately, white set up the wrong position so familiar from his analyses (with Qe4 instead of Qe3) and played the intended move Ra1-d1.

19.Qe4 .. followed by 20.Rd1 .. would still have been very inconvenient for black.
