  tpstar: In this KGA line with c3, it's understandable how White would consider b4, aiming to kick the Nc6 but also expand on the Queenside in case Black chooses 0-0-0. Instead of the reactionary 8 ... a6, Black should consider 8 ... Nf6, and if 9. b5 Ne7 10. Qb3 d5 11. ed Nfxd5 12. Ba3 Be6 (Bosboom-Van Gisbergen, Volmac 1991). Or 9. Qb3 Qe7 (Black should always meet Qb3 with ... Qe7) 10. Nbd2 g4 11. Ne1 Nh5 12. Nd3 Nxd4! 13. Qd1 Qh4 14. Nxf4 Ne6 15. Nxe6 Bxe6 16. Qb3 Be5 0-1 (Elburg-Haataja, Corr. 1991). Here Black played it just right, meeting 9. Qb3 with 9 ... Qe7, then recapturing on e5 with a piece, then 16 ... 0-0! and Black had better play. White probably didn't like 20. ab Rxa1 21. Rxa1 cb 22. Bxb5 Bxb5 23. Qxb5 Qxc3 24. Rd1 Rc8 or 24. Ra2 Qe3+ & 25 ... Rc8 and Black's active pieces dominate the board, but the game continuation lost a piece.
