Aug-21-03 | | djp: I see nothing wrong with 5. Ne5 to exploit black's pinned knight. It threatens Nxc6, Pxc6, Bxc6+ winning the A8 rook. |
|
Aug-22-03 | | Jonber: What do you mean by ‘Pxc6’? Do you mean bxc6?
It’s unlikely that Black will allow White to exploit the pin, since he has both Bd7 and Nge7 to defend with, so 5.Ne5 is rather purposeless, and it looses time, since it’s the second time the knight moves and it can be chased away at Black’s convenience. White has several other meaningful choices: d3, O-O and Bxc6+ springs to mind. |

Jun-03-04 | | fred lennox: After 18 g3, white's pawn position is amusing in it's symmetry. Anderssen knew his Philidor who wrote that pawns on the weaker wing were generally best placed on the same color as the defendings side's bishop, as it is here. |

 | | tamar: <drukenknight> 21...Bxg3 doesn't work very well, because of 22 hxg3 Qxg3+ 23 Qg2 Interesting annotations to this game by Boden, Lowenthal, and Staunton can be found on http://www.chessarch.com/excavation... After 18...d4?!, Staunton makes mention that Kolisch lost patience and "determined at all risks" to open the position with pawn sacrifices, only to have the tables turned within a few moves and his own King attacked. 18...e4 looks better for black. |

Nov-10-04 | | Kean: This game is very interesting and it really has the feeling of a modern game; 5.Bxc6 and then c4 blockading the c5-pawn and threatening to triple pawns, and then he fiancchetoed his QB; cant believe is Anderssen the tactician who is playing. 28.d4 to get ride of the backward pawn and post the queen on the long a1-h8 diagonal in route to the black king is very strong. |

Jul-05-06 | | ganstaman: I know I'm more than 2 years late, but I'd like to comment, even if it's just to myself. <fred lennox: After 18 g3, white's pawn position is amusing in it's symmetry. Anderssen knew his Philidor who wrote that pawns on the weaker wing were generally best placed on the same color as the defendings side's bishop, as it is here. > I like white's pawn structure here. It attacks the center from the wings, sucking black into the center, where the e3 and d3 pawns form a little craddle. Then the center disappears and white is left more advanced on the wings. The backwardness of the e and d pawns doesn't really matter too much, as they are generally gone by the time the e or d file becomes (half) open to black. Anyway, I've called this structure the Batman pawn structure. Remove all the pieces and the white pawns look like Batman's mask to me. And since Batman is a strong, aggressive fighter, I figure this structure is too... |

Jan-26-07 | | Themofro: Great game by Anderssen.
<djp> I agree with Jonber. 5. Bxc6 is definately correct. In the Bird's opening if white is given the oppurtunity to fianchetto queenside then he should generally speaking do so. If the bishop is finachettoed on the queenside or can be fianchettoed on the queenside, then white should almost always play Bb5 and then trade it off for the knight on c6. The bishop at b2 in combination with pawns at e3+f4 and a knight at f3 give white complete controll of the central dark squares of e5 and d4 which are critical in the Bird's once the knight at c6 has been traded off. If white can acheive that setup i find the position very favorable and good for white.
If white played 5. Ne5 or anything other than Bxc6 then black can play Bd7 or something similair to aviod the doubled pawns, which are very bad for black, as the half open file bites on granite in the pawn at b3. |
