GrahamClayton: Black was denied the chance of using the "echo" theme, which is common in studies, but rare in games. The "echo" is when at least 2 defensive moves are met with corresponding attacking moves.

eg 37.♔f1 ♗e1 38.♗e1 ♕g2#, or 37.♔d1 ♗e1 38.♗e1 ♕c2#. ♕g2# & ♕c2# are the "echo" moves.

  ballroomblitz: It happened 35. ... f5 !!? Neumann played 36.exf5? (36.Qe3) offering drawn. No,thanks,because exactly now I have a mating combination(Ignaz Kolisch)Probably inspired by the present Sam Loyd ...
Dec-09-14  Knight13: Excellent positional play by Kolisch, far ahead of his time.

I think 14. Nd5?! is a small inaccuracy. Continuing the development with 14. Bb2, to be followed by Rad1, seems more accurate.

Fusilli: The mating net at the end is aesthetically beautiful in its simplicity.
