perfidious: Given the Soviet boycott of non-world title qualifiers following Korchnoi's defection to the west, it is not at all likely that this game was played between these opponents at the time.

perfidious: Most interesting; I had always believed Korchnoi vs Yusupov, 1981 was the first meeting between Korchnoi and a Soviet player outside the framework of the FIDE title series in the aftermath of Korchnoi's defection.

Retireborn: <perf> Korchnoi was top board for Volmac (a Dutch team) and Balashov top board for "Burevestnik". According to Olimpbase they played each other 3 times (all draws), two of which can be found on here.

Balashov had been one of Karpov's seconds in Baguio, so he was no doubt well-prepared for these games.

I learned this some years ago because someone (probably Timman or Speelman) mentioned it in the context of this game, played on second board of the same match:-

Timman vs Smyslov, 1979
