Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-08-05  thebriarpatch: I'm surprised there are no comments on this one. Quite a bit of fireworks at the end...
Aug-09-05  thebriarpatch: I was looking at this again. If Black plays 39... h5, how does White win?

I have 40. Qe8+ Kh7 41. Bxg6+ Qxg6 42. Qe7+ Kh8 (or 42...Qg7 43. Nf6+ Kg6 44. Qxg7+ Kxg7 45. Nxh5+ and 46. Nxf4) 43. Nf6 Qg3+ 44. Kg1 with White to deliver the fatal blow with either Qf8+ or Qe8+ if Black plays Qg7.

Or if 39... h6 then 40. Qe8+ Kh7 41. Bxg6+ Qxg6 42. Nf6+ Qg7 43. Qxg7+ Kxg7 44. Nh5+ followed by Nxf4 with an albeit lesser winning position.

Am I missing anything here?

Aug-25-06  ruinme: Had similar questions briarpatch. Looks like Black can hold on for a bit with four pawns3 connected and a rook against a queen and two pawns. Mating with a queen against a rook is something even masters mess up!
Sep-28-16  Taulmaril: 38. Kxg8 just wins. I spent some time looking to see if I missed something but didn't see anything. Computer gives it a +4.5 . Amazing that korchnoi missed such a simple move. Maybe time pressure was a factor, but still.
