Jul-27-22  tbontb: Arguably Szabo's best game of the tournament, not least according to Kotov ! The hanging pawns advance to pin down the weakness on b7, in classic fashion. Finally, the advantage resolves into an active versus passive R endgame where Szabo demonstrates exemplary precision to win.

plang: 9..Ba5 as played earlier in the tournament by Najdorf in his win against Reshevsky is the main line; 9..cxd was new and has been repeated only once as Szabo points out that it is a poor fit with 8..a6. 12..b5 13 d5! would have been powerful for White. 14..Nxe7 looks like an improvement as in the game White gets a clear positional edge. The passive 32..Rd8?! led to a bad rook ending; Bronstein suggested 32..f5 33 g3..f4 34 Rd6..fxg+ 35 hxg..Rd8 though White would still have had an advantage. If 37..hxg 38 Kf4 and Black is already in zugzwang; ie. 38..Ke7 39 g4..Kf7 40 g5. The alternative 53..Rb5 doesn't help Black after 54 Rb6..Kxf3 55 Rxb5..axb 56 Kb4! winning the extra tempo with a clear victory.
