Dec-04-06 | | Whitehat1963: Tuesday puzzle after 20...Bd6. (Player of the Day) |

Dec-04-06 | | Sydro: Not quite as good if black plays 21...fxe6 21...Rxc1 is really bad. |
|
Dec-18-11 | | King Death: Black committed seppuku in this one (not that 21...fe 22.Rc7 Bc7 23.Bb4 was going to be any fun to play out against a GM). |

 | | FSR: Gross Blunder. |
|
Sep-17-21 | | Brenin: This game is a QGA, as in quite gross aberration, not a QGD. |
|
Sep-17-21 | | Muttley101: <Brenin>: This game is a QGA, as in quite gross aberration, not a QGD.> The opening classification is correct, as it transposes to a position that would normally arise out of a Chigorin defence to the queen's gambit. If you want to be picky, it should be "Queen's gambit, Chigorin defence (by transposition)". |

 | | FSR: This marks twelve consecutive months (October 2020 through September 2021) where at least one of my puns was used for the GOTD. |

 | | Teyss: The pun was begging to be made.
<FSR> You're on a roll! Patience is a virtue: 8 years an a half... Would say you have so many in the pipe they'll keep on coming now. Even before 20...Bd6 Black's position is difficult: underdeveloped, B+N vs B pair, weak Qside.
And after 21...fxe6 22.Bxb4 (better than Rxc7 immediately: wins a tempo) Be5 or Bf4 (not Rxc1? as in the game) 23.Rxc7 Bxc7: one P down and weak e6 P. SF gives +2 |
|
Sep-17-21
 | | Teyss: Should have been more specific in my subline: after 21...fxe6 22.Bxb4 Rxc1? 23.Rxc1 there is a cute twin pin on the d6 B.

23...Kd7 (else 24.Bxd6 or Rc8+) 24.Rd1 or 23...Ke7 24.Rc7+ |

Sep-17-21 | | Messiah: Worst pun ever. |
|
Sep-17-21 | | Brenin: <Muttley101>: Thank you for the correction. When I was young and foolish, I regarded the QGD with some disdain as an old man's opening, and never took the trouble to learn it properly. Now that I'm old and foolish, i have neither the time nor the energy for that task, so it's good to have these subtleties pointed out. However, as someone who has spent half a century being professionally picky, I'm still a little troubled. Clearly, a gambit can be declined and later accepted, but can it be accepted and later declined? If you offer me money, I can accept it and then have second thoughts and decline (or more accurately return) it, but if you offer me a meal, and I accept and eat it, it stays accepted and eaten. It's the same in chess: after 2 ... dxc4 that pawn goes back into the box and stays there, even if I give one back later. For that reason, I would prefer to see the qualification "(by transposition)" whenever one opening morphs into another. It's also a more accurate record of how individual players approach the openings. |

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Sep-17-21 | | RookFile: <Brenin: Clearly, a gambit can be declined and later accepted, but can it be accepted and later declined?> I guess it was conditionally accepted, but later, there was a return to sender. |

 | | FSR: <Teyss> This pun just barely made it in. The most puns chessgames allows you to have submitted at a time is 301, and I'm usually at that number, so whenever I submit a new pun, I have to retire at least one old one. Very recently, I almost took this one down, figuring that after 8 1/2 years it was never gonna make it. |
|
Sep-19-21
 | | Teyss: <FSR> You have to be patient, 8 1/2 years is nothing in CGP timeframe (Cosmic Greater Plane, another dimension where time very slowly flows by). |
