Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-10-06  Whitehat1963: So seemingly simple. Where did Nimzo first go wrong?
Jan-10-06  meloncio: I'm not sure of the first one, but 30.Rc3 looks like a time-trouble blunder. I think 30.Re1 was better.

A nice game for Marshall.

Jan-10-06  shaikh123: <meloncio>i agree with you Re1 could have saved white losing the queen and eventually the game.
Oct-09-06  notyetagm: <shaikh123: <meloncio>i agree with you Re1 could have saved white losing the queen and eventually the game.>

Sorry but 30 ♖e1 costs White a piece.

The line is 30 ♖e1 ♕b6+! <makes the White b2-bishop loose with tempo> 31 ♔h1 ♖xe1+ 32 ♕xe1 <deflection from b2> ♕xb2 and Black is ahead a whole piece.

29 ... ♗d3! is a brilliant idea by Marshall: use the opposite-colored bishops to force the entry of the Black rook onto the 7th rank. Since White's bishop is dark-squared, he cannot use it to keep the Black e8-rook out of the light square e2.

Apr-20-08  Whitehat1963: Wednesday/Thursday puzzle after 29. Qd2.
Feb-11-12  RookFile: Marshall employs a favored defense aginst one of it's foremost practicioners.
Nov-19-19  sudoplatov: Stockfish suggests that 11.Be2 is weak and that 12.c4 is necessary. Then: 11...Nc6 is not nearly as good as 11...Nc4. Of course, 12. 0-0 is seen as an error and 12...c4 gives Black a .43 Pawn advantage. 13.Rd1 isn't as good as 13.e4 (Nach StockFisch) so perhaps Nimzovich is just drifting into a bad position by letting Marshall develop unimpeded. 14.Nd5 is also rated poorer than a4. The analysis is a bit unstable though. 20.ed5 is seen to give White a .23 advantage but 20...Nd5 gives Black a -.47 rating. (Positional Horizon Pushing.) I think N just drifted by allowing M to centralize.
Nov-19-19  sudoplatov: Later on, 29.Qb5 is suggested over Qd2 and 30.Qb4 is better than Re3. 30...Qb6 is called better than 30....Re2 (though Re2 worked well in practice.)
