Jul-11-06  RookFile: Alekhine pointed out that with this move order (a failure to play an early c4 by white) black can equalize almost immediately by ...c5.
Mar-11-10  Ulhumbrus: The move 10...d5 suggests that Nimzowitsch is willing to play with hanging pawns after 11 ed ed, and how well he handles them!

DanQuigley: Nimzowitsch's comment to his move 31 (...Qd7) in Chess Praxis: "The weakness in the white camp, the pawn on e3, the b2 square, and the vulnerable position of the King, are now dealt with according to the rules of the art. See the technique of alternation in My System." I've done a search on the word "alternation" in My System and come up empty.

beatgiant: <DanQuigley> There are various English translations of his term. "Alternation," "maneuvering against two weaknesses," "tacking about," etc.

Unfortunately this link doesn't work for me (as a non premium user?) but I believe the German would be Wechsel or Abwechslung.

Oh well, I'll just persist in my delusion. What else is new?

beatgiant: <tonsillolith> Maybe what he meant is, even if you can't access the link, you can actually inspect the URL, where it says "search=lavieren".
Jun-10-25  stone free or die: <tonsillolith> sidestepping to Google for the search:

https://www.google.com/search?q=lav...

(I edited out a lot of tracking fluff from the url)

Here's a simple direct link to a discussion of Nimzo's use of the term:

Steinitz vs M Weiss, 1882 (kibitz #5)

.

Jun-11-25  tonsillolith: Can't just let me persist, huh?!

Well thanks, those were interesting things: the game itself, the inspiration of Nimzo from Steinitz, the connection of 'lavieren' to sailing...
