Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-09-05  paladin at large: Fine endgame play by Maroczy. His king gets a jump on the finish with moves 28-30. Zugzwang at the end dooms either white's b- or f-pawn.

Phony Benoni: In this, his first significant international tournament, Reti showed he wasn't quite ready for prime time by scoring only 3 draws in 19 games, including beginning and ending with seven game losing streaks.

In the previous round, he had blasted tactically in Marshall vs Reti, 1908. Now Maroczy wins with the patient approach. White looks quite fine for most of the game, but can't find anything decisive and runs around in circles while Black just gets better and better.
