Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-23-04  azaris: Taimanov loses his queen at the right time to exploit White's temporarily disordered troops and complete his development into a superior position. He then proceeds to outplay Mikenas in his usual technical style.
Mar-18-12  optimal play: Taimanov played 11...♖c8 against Mikenas compared with Popovís 11...♘e7 V Mikenas vs L Popov, 1962 and opens up a Q-side attack whilst leaving all his K-side pieces untouched until 19 moves into the game!? Mikenas forces the exchange with 23.♖c1 as the Black Rook at c6 has no support other than the Queen, and surrenders a R+B for Q as well as picking up Black's a-pawn and achieving a passed-pawn for himself. But then 28.♔g2? doesn't seem urgent enough to abandon his own b-pawn, and White subsequently has to give up his Rook for a Bishop to prevent Blackís b-pawn from Queening. After that it was just a losing battle by Mikenas to try and salvage a draw.
