STYNTZ: another DANISH GAMBIT. it is amazing how many times black gets destroyed with it. maybe it should have its own opening code to distinguish from center game propper.
Aug-03-03  jmcd2002: I've often wondered why some gambits don't have ECOs: the Danish, the Latvian, the Wilkes-Barre/Traxler, etc. They certainly lead to distinct sorts of games. Can anyone tell me the reason?
Aug-03-03  refutor: popularity at grandmaster level...if the danish/latvia/wilkes-barre were played semi-regularly they would get their own code. since they're mainly played among correspondence masters and amateurs, they don't get their own ECO code ;)

John Saunders: This game was played no later than April 1952. It can be found in the Staffordshire Advertiser for Friday 11 April 1952, page 4, where the header text reads "A curious brevity played at second board in a recent county match between Essex and Herts. White, J. Penrose Black W. E. B. Pryor Danish Gambit." The player of the Black was William Ernest Baker PRYER (note spelling) for whom details may be found in the Varsity biographical file - http://www.saund.co.uk/britbase/pgn...

The game also appears in Leonard Barden's book 'The Guardian Book of Chess' on page 90 where Leonard writes that it was played "some years ago" (the book was published in 1967) so we are no nearer having an exact date. I guess 1952 will do for now.
