plang: 8 a3 had been introduced by Makogonov in his win over Ravinsky in the 1944 USSR Championship (8..Qxb2 9 Na4..Qc2 10 Qxc2..Bxc2 11 Nc5 favors White). Petrosian had planned on answering 12..Qxb2? with 13 Bd2 which favors White but after the game it was determined that 13 Nxd5! would have been even stronger. 17..g6 would have been more solid. 19..Qxb2! would have been very strong with the idea of answering 20 Qxd5 with 20..Be7!. 20 Rc1! would have been very strong. Mueller offers 21..Nd3! 22 f5..Nxe1 23 fxe..Nf3+ 24 Nxf3..Rxe6 25 Ne5..Nf6 26 Qf5..Qd5 as a refutation of White's play. Black's last chance to maintain the advantage was 24..f5! 25 Ng5..Rc6 26 Re5..Be7 27 Rfe1..Qa6.
