Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-17-14  jerseybob: What's the appeal of this line for white? In the examples from the Opening Explorer, in every case where black played sensibly - not even brilliantly, just sensibly - black gets an edge. Portisch does have a rep as a player who dislikes "irrational" positions, but this is absurd.

perfidious: <jerseybob> Are you referring to 8.Be5, or 5.Bg5? Liked this myself for Black--in fact, one of my games in this DB was played in the variation, though my IM opponent did not try 8.Be5 in any of three games we had with 5.Bg5.
Mar-17-14  jerseybob: Perfidious: No, one move further, 9.Qc2. There's a fine game Shamkovich-Polugaevsky, Moscow 1963(0-1,40) in Opening Explorer - but unfortunately not in this database - that might've inspired Langeweg to play this, though that's just a guess.
