  Chessical: Schlechter allows a French: Exchange Variation by playing <3. Bd3>. Schlechter often played this variation, but if offers White little more than safety.

Perhaps he wished to avoid Tarrasch's MacCutcheon variation of the French (Opening Explorer) which was popular at the time and which Tarrasch had used against Lasker in their 1908 world championship match.

If <18... Qxa2> 19. Bc4 Bb5 20. Bxb5 axb5 21. Qxb5= (but not 19...Qa4? 20. Ra1)
