  wwall: Instead of 40.f4, White should activate his king and play 40.Kg2 Kg5 41.Kf3 Kg6 [41...b6 42.e3 dxe3 43.fxe3 Kf6 44.Kf4] 42.Kf4 Kf6 43.c5 Ke6 44.e4 fxe4 45.Kxe4 and 46.Kxd4, winning.

Instead of 46.Kd2, which draws, White should be winning after 46.Kf3 Kb3 [46...Kc3 47.Ke3 (with opposition) 47..Kb4 48.Kd4] 47.Kf2 Kc3 48.Ke3 (opposition again) 48...Kb3 49.Kd2 Kb4 50.Kc2 Kc5 51.Kc3 Kd6 52.Kb4 Kc6 53.d4 and an easy win.

Jul-14-14  Howard: That king-and-pawn endgame made the endgame puzzles section of the Informant, back in '77.
