Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-18-06  Helloween: An interesting option was 17.Nf7!?. Shirov was obviously playing for a win with Black from the first move of this game and didn't mind going into the 3 pieces vs Queen middlegame that would have resulted after 17.Nf7!? Kxf7 18.Ng5+ hxg5 19.Bxd5 exd5 20.hxg5 Bxg5 21.Qd3.

By the time Black castles he has the much-to-be-preferred game. I like how he doesn't play the generic 21...e4 winning the exchange but giving White compensation after 22.Nf4 Bxa1 23.Qxa1 O-O 24.Rd1 Qf7 25.Rd6.

GrahamClayton: Unusual opening play by Shirov. Of his first dozen moves, 9 are by pawns, and the other three are by one piece, which is exchanged.
