  Check It Out: Someone with a computer might give definitive lines, but piling up on the weak e3 pawn looks like a good idea.

  The Long Diagonal: I think black can go after a bigger fish than pressuring a weak pawn. 17.Rf1 f5 intending ... Bxf3, ...Qh4 and ...Qh2#. White's problem is that he has no grip on the dark squares completely and there is no escape route for his king either. So, he doesn't seem to how much other choice than the one he made on board: giving the exchange back by 17.Nd2, even though the result is that he gets a lost endgame with one pawn down.
