White has an attack on the king's wing but it is blunted by Smyslov's brilliant 23...Nxf4!. Now after 24.Qxf4 g5 25.Qd2 g4! and ...Qh4+ the tablea are turned. So White chose 24.hxg6 Nxg6 25.Re1 f4 26.Qg4

and now threatens an attack in the centre which could have been liquidated by 26...Nd5, planning ...Ne3 (even 27.Nxd4 can be answered by 27...Ne3!). Smyslov however thought he had already solved his problems and opted for simplification without being able to stop the dangerous advance 30.e6.
