Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-30-06  blingice: This was an interesting and abrupt endgame. Pirc definetely didn't calculate the pawn rush as best as possible, and his final blunder was surprising for someone who could fight Spassky so well.

According to Pirc's Opening Repertoire Explorer, this is his only 1. e4 game, so it was probably a weird idea for him to play it against someone like Spassky (but this was when Spassky was 25, and before many of his accomplishments, and Pirc was 55, and thought he was wiser than 25 year old Spassky).

An Englishman: Good Evening: Spassky deserves credit for navigating through the complications from moves 20-40. This game doesn't look the slightest bit easy for either player. It would be interesting to speculate where the blunders are--off hand, I don't trust 38.Rh5.
Apr-30-06  blingice: 38. Rh8 Rxf5+ 39. Kg4 (?)
Apr-30-06  zev22407: This game deserve a deep analysis.

Open Defence: strange that Pirc played on till mate .. also Keres repeatedly commented that the Steinitz Deferred is a dependable line against the Ruy .. I hope some of the modern players adopt it again

An Englishman: Good Morning: <blingice>, in your suggested line, doesn't 39...Rf1; 40.g8/Q,Rg1+ followed by 41...Rxg8 and 42...Nxa2 leave Black with a winning material edge?

If true, then instead of 38.Rh5, what about 38.Kf4,Rxg7; 39.Rxg7,Nxa2; 40.Ke4 as an alternative?

May-06-06  blingice: <AE> Yes, the first one does seem like the correct refutation.

The second doesn't seem as plausible. Why is 38..Rxg7 forced? I don't think it may be possible for white to overcome the (what will be) three pawn advantage on a side, even if he has a rook for a bishop, so that line still isn't good for white. Black's idea was to stop the g pawn, so he could focus on his attack that was going.

<crafty> Please analyze white's options on move 38.

May-07-06  crafty: 37...♖g5 38. ♖h5 ♖xh5 39. ♘xd4+ ♗xd4 40. g8=♕ ♔b7 41. bxc3   (eval -1.67; depth 14 ply; 1500M nodes)
May-07-06  blingice: That's surprising that it was the best move. It seems very desperate for white to move his rook to h5, and it seems like only a small diversion with the line <crafty> gives.
Jul-11-16  zanzibar: Like <An Englishman> says <I don't trust 38.Rh5.> (from 10 years ago!)... all the usual suspects (365,CB,NIC) give 38.Kf4 instead.

When Black promotes at move 42, it's with check, and the mysterious 43.Kg4 isn't so mysterious any more.

fredthebear: Fascinating game with an anti-climatic finish.
