Jun-29-12 | | Petrosianic: <I play the Fred>: <Again, the rules aren't the same if the wins requirement is different. Fischer himself confirmed this when he refused to play the first-to-six format.> You're basically right. The FORMAT is the same, but the actual rules are different. There are four basic formats: Wins Required, Points Required, Wins and Points Required, and Wins OR Points Required. Fischer's original aims were to replace the Points Required Format with the old Wins Required format, and to abolish the champion's advantage. He succeeded in the first objective, but then changed his mind and decided he wanted to keep the champion's advantage after all. The problem is there was no way to do that in a Wins Required Format without taking the unprecedented step of forcing the challenger to win by 2 points. There were actually a few old matches played under that format (like Tchigorin-Gunsberg, I think), but not title matches. Most people, including most people in the West thought that was unfair, so it didn't happen. But it's doubtful Fischer would have played even if he'd gotten it. He agreed to play Gligoric and several others under that format and then walked out on each match at the last minute. It wasn't until 1992 that he could bring himself to play anyone again. |

Jun-29-12 | | Akshay999: 11. h3 would have been a great move.. wonder why TAL didnt play it |
|
Jul-23-13 | | Dr Lados Mangrov: Wow, I am breathless. |
|
May-17-14 | | Tal1949: I love the way Tal looked back at this game and admitted that he played horrible. Correct play by black and he would have been in heaps of trouble! |
|
May-17-14 | | Tal1949: Akshay99- Tal did say in his book that he cannot believe that he played 11 0-0-0. It was the mistake of schoolboy chess. 11 h3 was clearly the correct move which Tal himself found later on. |

Dec-19-16 | | dehanne: Tal on 11.0-0-0??
<Such a critical assessment is by no means a sign of the sceptical attitude of a venerable grandmaster to his young inexperienced namesake. If I had had to annotate this game 25 years ago, the verdict would have been the same. It is difficult to believe that white should miss the chance to win the game immediately using 'artihmetic': 11.h3 Qf5 (11...Qxg2 12.Rh2) 12.g4 Qg6 13.Nh4 Ne5 14.Bb5+ or 14.Qe2> |

Oct-02-18 | | jonjoseph: Oh yes. It`s a poor ,short version of sacrifice. It is not meraviglioso as a replacement. |

Feb-07-22 | | Brenin: A pair of schoolboy errors (11 0-0-0 and 12 Bf6) by a schoolboy Tal, followed by an attack which showed the world what to look forward to in years to come. |

 | | al wazir: 23. Rxh6 looks crushing -- a real Tal move. If 23...Bxg6 , then 24. Rxg6+ fxg6 25. Ne6+ Kh8. If 23...Bxg6, then 24. Rxg6+ fxg6 25. Ne6+. 23...Rh8, then 24. gxf7 Rxh6 25. Ne6+ Kh8 26. Nxf4. |

 | | offramp: Maxwell's silver hammer falls faster than a gold feather. It's been proved. |
|
Feb-07-22 | | Nosnibor: The original truism is surely " All that glitters is not gold." This is simply a play on words to justify the title to the game of the day. |
|
Feb-07-22 | | goodevans: <Nosnibor> I would consider "all that glitters is not gold" to be an aphorism rather than a truism. |
