Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-21-04  shr0pshire: It is interesting how Basman plays a hedgheog system with the Bird. Then goes and attack with his queen, and some minor pieces. It was a valiant effort by Basman, against the former world champioin.
Apr-21-04  Kenkaku: Tal plays a fairly passive opening system in this one. It would have been interesting if he had played From's Gambit, I would have liked to see how he would handle play in that opening.
Apr-21-04  shr0pshire: What is the From's Gambit? I have never heard of that before, but I really haven't studied the Bird indepth.
Apr-21-04  Kenkaku: 1. f4 e5 2. fxe5 (accepted variation) d6 3. exd6 Bxd6
Nov-28-06  luzhin: Note that if 28...Qxf7 then Basman plays 29.Bd5 winning the Queen, because if 29..Qxd5 then 30.Qg7 mate.Basman gives Tal a little bit of his own medicine!
Oct-28-13  YoungEd: I think that 1...d6 makes lots of sense against Bird's Opening; the White player is usually hoping to control the e5 square from the outset, and ...d6 makes that much more difficult.

Plaskett: Basman dubbed the formation of his kingside circa move 13 as ´The Christmas Tree Variation´.
Hence the line acquired that soubriquet.
(Although this was the only such game, I believe!)

perfidious: Never seen this played by White; of course, in the Leningrad Dutch, we have had numerous examples of the Christmas Tree in recent years.

Strikes me as outre, though, if typically offbeat Basman.

FSR: Can't believe it took him until move 38 to play g4.
