Nov-03-03 | | ughaibu: Pure Tal. |

Oct-07-04 | | woodenbishop: Nobody plays chess like the late GREAT Mikhail Tal! |
Oct-08-04
 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: woodenbishop, is that name a pun on the song "Wooden Ships?" In any case, one man played chess like Tal: Rashid Nezhmetdinov, in my opinion, the strongest IM ever. The database has four Tal-Nezh games; Nezh had 3 wins vs. 1 loss. It's a shame they never played a match. |
Oct-08-04 | | marekg248: I once read a story, I don't remember it clearly, but it had something to do with Nezhmetdinov and Tal, how someone (some very strong player) came to a hotel room (?) looking for Tal (?), and found an older man there. He noticed a chessboard and one of them suggested playing blitz, so they played first game, then second and some more. A visitor couldn't win a single game and the older man turned out to be Nezhmetdinov. Has anybody read that story too? |

"Once Mikhail Tal offered me to play 'a couple of speed games' in his hotel room. When I knocked, there was a tall middle-aged man whom I did not know. He said:
'Misha is away on some business, but he will be back soon, and asked me to let you in. Please, wait here, if you don't mind. We could play some blitz, too.'
I knew that Misha sometimes travels with his uncle Robert, so I thought it was he. Of course I stayed, and generously (so I thought) accepted the invitation to play to pass the time. I was crushed in the first game, in which I did not pay much attention, but when I lost four more games, I almost began to panic. It was very rare for me to lose in such style, going down in flames like the Russian ironclad in Tsusima in 1905. I could accept being crushed by Tal himself - but his uncle?.. With great effort I managed to even the score, and when Misha finally arrived, my opponent let him play, saying: 'Beware, I warmed him up for you!' Maybe the guy was right, because on that occasion I beat Tal something
like 8-1, restoring my self-confidence and reputation. 'Hm, said Misha, - Rashid Gibyatovich warmed you up indeed. Come tomorrow, and I hope to gain my revenge!'" |
Oct-11-04 | | marekg248: Thanks <azaris>, I just couldn't recall where I had read it. The strong player was Genrikh Chepukaitis, I see. |
Oct-11-04 | | Zaius: What's wrong with 15...Nxg4 ? |
Oct-11-04
 | | keypusher: 15...Nxg4 16 Rxf7 is checkmate |
Oct-11-04 | | Zaius: Oops, yes, thanks. |
Nov-22-04 | | woodenbishop: In the database there is only one game played between GM Tal and Chepukaitis, which Tal won of course. This game is based on factual documents proving the game was actually played between the two men and that Tal won... I find it laughable that someone would believe a story about a chess player with no where near the tournament experience nor inventiveness which Tal possessed could possibly beat him 8 - 1... not one of the top players of the 20th century established himself as one of the greatest players in the history of the royal game the way Mikhail Tal has done with his beautiful and unorthodox games. |
Nov-22-04 | | woodenbishop: Azaris, you failed to mention that Chepukaitis said that in his revenge match with Tal that Tal (not Chepukaitis) won by an even LARGER margin than 8-1... in other words, Chepukaitis got his nose blooded. |
Nov-22-04 | | whiskeyrebel: Damn...there never were really any "good old days"..but Tal's heyday came close! |
Nov-22-04 | | TheSlid: NN doesn't castle much, eh? |
Nov-22-04 | | jcmoral: Why won't NN take the queen? |
Nov-22-04 | | Swindler: Rxf7# is threathened. |
Nov-22-04 | | Kajtek: He'll get mated: If 14..Bxd1 15 Rxf7# |
Nov-22-04 | | Kajtek: Ops, you beat me to it |
Nov-23-04 | | jcmoral: Oh, right. Thanks. Must concentrate more... |
Apr-30-05 | | BabsonTask: The next paragraph on the article quoted by azaris above is : "And this is how I met Rashid Nezhmetdinov - one of the greatest combinational geniuses of all times. By the way, next day Tal won our return match by an even
greater margin..."
woodenbishop draws entirely the wrong conclusions. Chepukaitis was a specialist blitz player - you don't discount the accounts of his blitz strength by GMs and his blitz records by quoting a slow game against Tal (which even Chepukaitis admitted was not his forte). Korchnoi was Leningrad blitz champion 7 times, Chepukaitis 5 times. This man was no rabbit and in his younger days it was always a question of who was unofficial blitz champ of the USSR, Tal or Chepukaitis. (Of course, Korchnoi might have been peeved at this :)) |
Apr-30-05 | | aw1988: Great game, the point behind Nxd4 is that if Bxd1 Rxf7 is mate. |
Oct-14-05
 | | Wilson: Great game. I am becoming quite a Tal fan. was
13. ... Ke7 a mistake?
Is there a refutation to 13 ... Kf8 14 Nxd4 (14 Ng5 fails to Qxg5) Bxc5 (BxQ fails to 15. Nxe6+ Ke7 16. Rxf7 Kxe6 17. Bf6+ Kxe5 18. Bf4#) 15. Rxf7+ Kg8 16. Qxg4 Bxd4+ 17. Kh1 Bxe5 18. Qxe6 and mate is inescapable? If not the mistake has to be cxd4. |
Oct-14-05 | | aw1988: After 13. Nd6+, White is winning. If 13...Kf8, there follows the convincing 14. Nxf7!, where if 14...Kxf7 15. Ng5+ is a killer. After 14. Nxd4?! Black can try Nxe5, hoping White won't find 15. Qxg4!, with a difficult game for Black, although in my view he can probably defend. |
Oct-15-05
 | | Wilson: Nxf7 is probably better.
13. Nd6+ Kf8 14. Nxf7 Qe7 15. Nh6 Bxf3 16. Qxf3+ Ke8 17. Qh5+ Kd8 18. Nf7+ Kc7 19. NxR RxR and black is a rook down with a desperate position. Which means that by move 13 black is lost. 12. ... Nd5 loses quickly, especially with Bb5 on hand to protect the d7 square. So was the error in 11. ... cxd4? Or was 10. ... c5 too eager? 10. ... O-O looks better, but still uncomfortable. |
Jan-07-07
 | | Bishoprick: and by the way, although Tal had + scores against most of the strongest players in the world at the time, including Fischer, the one player who owned Tal was Korchnoi. At one point the score was 9-1 in Korchnoi's favor! |
