Apr-25-09  luzhin: Remarkable dismantling of Vaganian by Giddins, and a classic demonstration of the Hedgehog shooting its quills with b5 and d5 after White over-expands. Vaganian was probably OK, though, until he played 31.Qc2??. He had to keep an eye on the c4 square with 31.Qe2. At the end, if 39.Be4 then 39...Qxe2+ wraps up.

wordfunph: amusing comment by FM Giddins from BCM..

<"My head continued to analyse 30...Rxd6 and continued to maintain that there was no good defence for white, but the heart still wasn't having any of it. In the middle of this turmoil, however, Vaganian committed the decisive mistake of the game, by leaning over and whispering "Draw?" Instantly, all uncertainty vanished and the voice inside agreed with the head that white was indeed busted. After spending a few minutes getting over the shock, and deciding that now was the time to spring the 'Russian Gambit' on him, I whispered back "Nyet, ya hachu igrat" ("No, I want to play") and banged out the next move.">
