Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-06-08  Sem: Remarkable that a New Yorker should choose a game by Dutchman Lodewijk Prins. He was one of the stronger Dutch players before and right after WWII (he even beat Kotov in a Chess Olympiad). But ever since his compatriot, grandmaster Hein Donner started ridiculing him in print in the eighties, his figure has become a bit shadowy. (Both players are dead now.) He seems to have been a bit of a maverick, who nevertheless succeeded in organizing the Wereldschaaktoernooi, Amsterdam 1950, one of the strongest tournaments of the early fifties.

perfidious: <FSR> One suspects that your pun will be used in a GOTD.

Prins either repeated moves to gain time on the clock or overlooked the idea Nf8+ at move 29.

The solons just eat up my sophomoric puns, it seems.

WorstPlayerEver: Lodewijk Prins, who doesn't know him? Often ridiculed by J.H. Donner as 'most promising Dutch player after Euwe'. Ah, those were the days (when chess was still alive). Now we have to do it with compie compie zombies. The Paralyzed.
Aug-01-16  The Kings Domain: Complex game that went all over the place, and quite funny too.

The pun's corny.

Aug-01-16  Abdel Irada: ∞

They usually are.

Aug-01-16  Twocolors: And platitudinal...
Aug-01-16  castleguy12: Chessgames should have renamed it Prins Fry.
Aug-01-16  Dezaxa: I think I would have preferred 27 Nf8, cashing two pieces for the queen. After the game continuation, 27 Qf5 Kg8 28 Qd5, why doesn't Black play 28... Nf7? White is better, but it is not so decisive.
Aug-01-16  FrogC: I know this opening as the Reti Gambit.

And another is summarily devoured....

Aug-01-16  yadasampati: Quite amazing, the game ends with 13 checks in a row!

kevin86: White wins this one with a closing series of checks.

I believe this to be one of the greatest puns of all time. Perhaps reason 3) unnoticed by most of the users here. The reasons:

1. It is a french defense
2. The loser is Fry (and in the game he gets fried)
3. This name given to this gambit by CG is "Papa-Ticulat". "Papa" in Spanish means "potato". And therefore, a french fry.
