Mar-03-03  bishop: This game is probably repeated thousands of times each year.I have won this way on at least a dozen occasions. Being rightfully concerned that 4...Nf6? loses to 5.Ng5 Black blunders with 4...Be7?. Of course 5...Nxe5 also loses to 6.Nxe5 dxe5 7.Qh5.

  Sneaky: <4...Nf6? loses to 5.Ng5> isn't 5...d5 a plausible defense?
Mar-03-03  bishop: After 5...d5 6.exd5 I think it is very dfficult for Black to recover, although perhaps he does'nt have to resign quite yet.
Mar-03-03  drunknight II: it is games like this, that made people give up playing this defense. Did Philidor have this much trouble? Playing Nd7 will often lead to trouble. what about 6...N(d)f6? can he save it?
Mar-03-03  AgentRgent: Dk, umm no. 6...Ndf6 7. Qxf7+ Kd7 8. Nxe5+
Mar-03-03  drunknight II: yeah thats bad, I guess that leaves us w/ 6...Bb4+ and maybe get the Q to f3
Mar-03-03  AgentRgent: 6...Bb4+ 7. c4 and the threat of mate wins the bishop.
Mar-04-03  drunknight II: Oh I dunno maybe it is allright after: 6...Bb4+ 7. c3 Qe7

now whats your move?

Mar-04-03  AgentRgent: 8. cxb4
Mar-04-03  aulero: Obviously the correct move is 4...c6. Alekhine used successfully the Philidor defense many times, in particular there is this very famous and exceptional short game Rodzynski vs Alekhine, 1913
Jul-31-16  Eduardo Bermudez: Sometimes you can continue playing with black pieces and get the full point, for example: see Jimenez Morales vs Bermudez Barrera, Sevilla, 2014
