Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-06-06  who: I'm not sure why Shirov resigned at this point. Is there a killer combo coming?
Jan-06-06  LancelotduLac: Note that this was "advanced chess," so both players were using powerful computer engines which can calculate such positions very precisely.

I think the problem is that Black's king is getting mauled and has no real shelter -- if he moves anywhere on the f-file, for example, White can respond with 38.Bd5; and if he runs to the h-file then something like Reg1 looks devastating.

Jan-06-06  MichaelJHuman: 35...f6 does not seem to help black. 36. Bd5 Rd8 37. Re6+ Kf7 38. Rxb6+

35...Kh8 looks like it loses a bishop. 36. Reg1 Rxb2+ 37. Kxb2 Bxg1 38. Rxg1

I am no expert though.
