plang: In game 8 of the 2000 WC match Kramnik had played 15 Bb5 but after 15..Rfd8 16 e4..Nc7 White had no advantage; Sokolov chose M;Gurevich's favorite move 15 e4. 16..Rad8 had just been played in Jelen-Onischuk Vienna 1996 (not included in this database) and after 17 g3? Black was already better. 17 Ne2 didn't appear any better as 19 Kxg2..fxe would have been strong for Black but fortunately Sokolov found the strong 19 d5! at the board. 19..fxe 20 dxe..exf 21 Nc3..Nf6 22 e7..Rd2 23 exf+..Kxf8 would have been good for White. Black perhaps should have tried 20..Ne5 21 Kxg2..Rxd5. With 28 Be3!? White sacrificed material but made the two bishops even more dominant. Black was in time trouble but Sokolov had no advice for Black improvements (perhaps 31..Kg7).
