Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-06-04  JohnBoy: Given that white is down an X at move 27, why didn't she play 27.Qh6? Is there something faulty with it that I am missing? This seems to secure at least a draw in a tough position.

What white did certainly didn't do the trick...

  tpstar: <JohnBoy> After 22 ... Rxc2 White should have gone for 23. Qxc2 Rxc2 24. Kxc2 with better chances to hold than 23. Rxe7+?! which gave up the exchange without any convincing follow-up. 27. Qh6?! would lose to 27 ... Rxb2+! 28. Kxb2 Qf2+ 29. Ka1/Kb1 Qxe1+ and Black mates soon. White can try declining with 28. Ka1 Rxa2+! 29. Kb1 but then 29 ... Ra1+! 30. Kxa1 Qd4+ 31. Ka2 Qf2+ & 32 ... Qxe1+, or 31. Kb1 Qd3+ 32. Ka2 Qb3+ 33. Ka1 Qxa3+ 34. Kb1 Qb3+ 35. Ka1 Qc3+ & 36 ... Qxe1.
