plang: Game 1 of their third round match in the World Championship tournament; Svidler also won game 2 to clinch the match and then went on to defeat Adams and Gelfand before losing to Ponomariov in the semi-finals. 12 e5 had been played in Pavasovic-Timoschenko 2000 Istanbul Olympiad where White went on to win; 12 b3 was new (Svidler was not familiar with the earlier game). Black misjudged the position with 14..Bg4? allowing White a powerful attack; 14..Bf5 15 Rae1..Rae8 would have been better with just a small White edge. 19..Rc5 20 Qxg7+..Qxg7 21 Bxg7..Kxg7 22 hxg..Rf6 23 Rf7..Kg8 24 Re8+..Kg7 25 Ne5+..Kf7 26 Rf8+..Kxe6 27 Re1+ would have been winning for White. 23..d4 24 Qc4..Kh8 25 Rf7!..Rg8 26 f5..Rxe6 27 fxe would also have been winning for White.
