Kibitzer's Corner
May-04-16  Sergash: Hans Olav Lahlum was apparently the organizer of the tournament and had decided to invite Carlsen, 10 years old. At first, he was apparently worried that the event could be too strong for the child. His concerns would vanish when Carlsen drew against IM Marijan Petrov (rated 2425) in round 7.

M Petrov vs Carlsen, 2001

Hans Olav Lahlum was born in Norway in 1973, he is a writer, an historian and a journalist. He is also an international chess arbiter since 2000, and an international chess organizer since 2002.

He has written biographies of Oscar Torp and Haakon Lie, and several books about US Presidents.

He is a member of the Socialist Party and is related to the norvegian spy and resistant Dagmar Lahlum, who had a love relation with the double agent Eddie Chapman.

<16.Na4?! Qd8 = (only move)> 16.Rac1! .

<19.Ne5?!> 19.Rac1!

<23.Rf7? Kg8! => 23.Nd4!

<24.Qf2? Nc6! 25.Rf6 Nxe5 26.Be2 (only move) Qe7 / > Lahlum is now winning...

<27.Nd4?!> Better is 27.g5 Rc8 28.h4 Nf7! Bf3

<27...Rf8??> 27...Nf7! 28.Qh4 Re8! 29.g5 Kg7!

<29...Nd6?! 20.Bg4!> 29...Rc8!

<30...e5?! 31.Rxf8+! Qxf8 32.Bxd7 (only move) Qxf2+ 33.Kxf2 exd4 = > 30...Rxf6! 31.gxf6 Qe8

Nice recovery from a lost game by the kid!
