Jan-02-04  Lawrence: Michell was playing very well until 29.....Bb4, which was premature. He should first have played 29.....b5. These subtleties are lost on a patzer like me. (Junior 8, eval after move 35 +3.11)
Jan-03-04  mdorothy: Lawrence, it doesn't have to be lost forever with you. The simplest way to explain why b5 is needed before Bb4 is that without it, the knight at d5 is overworked protecting the pawn and the bishop. And Capablanca uses this overworked knight to gain him a pawn, and a good position leading to a not so unusual win for the brilliant master.
Jan-03-04  Lawrence: Thanks, mdorothy, I see what you mean. Michell either had to move the Bishop to b2, e7, or f8 OR move the pawn to b5 (better) but NOT stick the Bishop on a square defended by a Knight which is already needed to defend a pawn.
Jan-04-04  Calli: b5 creates a weakness at c5,

29...b5 30.Qe2 Bb4 31.Nec5 Qd6 32. Rec1 and white has an advantage

Why not 29...Qe7? then exchange pawns and white only has a small edge, IMHO.

Jan-04-04  Lawrence: Calli, Junior 8 finds 29.....b5 30. ♕e2 ♕e7 31.a6 ♗b4 32.♖ec1 e5 33.♘ec5 ♗xc5 eval +0.8 whereas 29.....♕e7 30.axb6 ♘xb6 31.♕a6 ♗b4 32.♖ec1 ♖b8 33.♘ec5 e5 34.♘d3 ♗d6 35.♘xe5 ♗xe5 36.dxe5 ♕xe5 37.♗xc6 eval +1.00
Jan-04-04  Calli: 34...Bd6? Clearly bad 34...Bxd3 35.Qxd3 exd4 36.Nxd4 Rd8 is equal. Or if 36.Rxc6 Rxc6 37.Bxc6 Bc3.
Jan-04-04  Lawrence: Calli, after writing that last post I left our feckless friend of the silicon persuasion running while I perused "Recent Kibitzing" and when I got back it had changed the last half of the 29.....Qe7 line to 33.♕e2 ♗a3 34.♖cb1 ♘d5 35.♘bc5 ♖xb1+ 36.♖xb1 ♕f8 37.♖b3 ♖a7 38.f3 ♗b4 eval +1.03 Does this seem more feasible now?
