An Englishman: Good Evening: After an indifferent opening, Reshevsky gets a gift mistake (21...Bxc3), and slowly constricts the life out of Black's position. The second half of the game looks like one of Petrosian's quiet little gems as Reshevsky "gently" persuades Black to retreat, until he cracks with the rash 37...g5 in reaction to the threatened 38.Rd6.

What's especially interesting is how quickly Black collapses without any spectacular fireworks.

May-28-10  Dr. J: It seems to me that Black can improve considerably with 39 ... Rxf7 (40 Qxc8+ Rf8 or 40 Rd8+ Rf8 41 Rxf8+ Kxf8 42 Qxc8+ Kg7) White is still a pawn up, but Black has an outside passed pawn and some K-side counterplay. Perhaps White is winning, but this still has to be a LOT better than the text, which leaves his King totally exposed to attack.
