Oct-19-04  chessslayer: you have to give it to morphy .....the man was good at tactics.....
Dec-01-05  Chopin: Morphy was a tactical genius.
Jan-13-06  Pawn Ambush: At this young age you see Morphy playing the opening superbly I can't understand how his father and uncle failed to play the black side of the Evans better!
Jan-13-06  Saruman: 26.Re2 Ne3+ 27.Rxe3 Qf2# very nice.
Jan-14-06  morpstau: How to play the black Ev.gambit.
Apr-28-09  WhiteRook48: 15 Qxa5 looks bad to me.
Aug-17-09  birthtimes: 20. Bxf8 Qxh3+ 21. Kg1 Qg3+ 22. Kh1 Ne3 and mate shortly.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Today's Game of the Day (Chigorin-Steinitz) inspired me to look at the 6...Nf6 variation, and I see that Morphy played it before Anderssen, but Anderssen played it more often, and I cannot help but wonder--should this variation be named in honor of *both* grest rivals?!
Jan-29-16  juanhernandez: But nothing is greater than Friendship.
Oct-28-16  romancitog: No one could touch Morphy
Mar-15-20  Mini Morphy: He was 13 years old here!!
Apr-14-21  paulmorphy1969: date correct is 20 october 1852

This match was published in London's Field column (9/18/1858) and incorrectly dated 1849 and with no opponent's name link: http://www.chessarch.com/excavation... Instead in the book of Sergent game CXLIX dated 1850 of Shibut game 87 dated 1850, Maroczy game 9 from 20 October 1850/52 But the mystery is solved, in my research I found in the book The Chess world 1865 Volume 1 pag 293 Maurian publishes 2 unreleased games at the time, this was one of the 2 between Morphy vs Mc Connel dated 1852 link: https://books.google.it/books?id=p3... In a previous publication we find the exact complete date October 20, 1852 in the New York Clipper, July 26, 1856 link: http://www.chessarch.com/excavation...

MissScarlett: The game in that<Field> column of September 18th is Morphy vs J McConnell, 1849 not this one. Boden must have picked it from Maurian's column in the <Sunday Delta> of June 6th. So it was that game not this that was dated 1849.

However, when both games appeared in <Chess World> in 1865, Staunton, presumably on Maurian's prompting, said they were from 1852. So the confusion seems to originate with Maurian.

Two weeks before, in the July 12th column, Marache printed a letter from Ernest Morphy (Paul's uncle) which concluded:

<Among my chess-rubbish, I found another game, which you have herewith.>

From Marache's reply:

<We feel grateful for the interest you take in our sheet, and certes, with such contributors, we cannot but succeed. May you find among your "chess-rubbish" many such specimens of gold dust as you lately forwarded to us. We shall be most happy to enliven our columns with such fine games, particularly when played by such a youthful follower of Philidor as Paul Morphy. We would give much to have him here, that our best players could measure their strength and mettle against him, although we much doubt with any hope of sucess, as he must have greatly improved since his contests with the far-famed Herr Lowenthal.>
